Oddly enough, the first "romance" comic was "Young Romance", which was created by two men: Joe Simon and Jack Kirby.

Back then there weren't really any women comics writers..or artists for that matter.
Simon and Kirby were a prolific team and created many firsts..the first romance comic was just one of them.
They ended up splitting up and Kirby went on to do a lot of work for Marvel, co-creating the Fantastic Four, Thor, Iron Man, and various other characters with Stan Lee. For DC he also co-created The Challengers of the Unknown, created the New Gods, Mr. Miracle, The Forever People, The Demon, Omac, and co-created Kammandi, last Boy on Earth.

Are there a lot of women writing comics now? It seems like men usually write them, even today.

There are more today than there were back in the 40's, 50's or 60's.
One of the first women artists in the 60's was Marie Severin, who probably got started because her brother John was working in comics before her.
There was also Ramona Fraddon, who penciled books like Metamorpho and ended up doing the Brenda Starr newspaper strip later on.
During the 80's to 2002 Jenette Kahn was actually the publisher of DC Comics. She had an extremely long run as publisher, up until her retirement.

A man named Paul Levitz has been running it since JK's retirement. Levitz started out as a fan and was brought in via DC's New Talent Program some years back. He wrote a variety of comics, but is especially known for writing their Legion of Super-Heroes book. He rose up the ranks to Editorial Director and replaced Kahn as publisher upon her retirement.
