I got him as a baby and his name is Clancy.

Will try to get a few pictures of him, but he's kind of shy.

What I really like is that I am fortunate to have an excellent southern exposure and I can put his tank out
back where he gets plenty of sun.  Loves to bask himself and his shell is multicolored and sparkles in the sun.

Need to bring him in at night because it gets way to cold for him.

As winter advances I will need to get him some kind of sun lamp to keep him happy.  Turtle food mostly but he
does like various insects that come about.

My bulldog looks at him occasionally with a bit of curiosity when he sticks his neck out.

The way you describe him makes him sound quite pretty... Hope you can get some pictures of him. Smiley

His markings are awesome.  I read that they like a rock to bask themselfs on.  Instead, I got an old abalone shell
that he climbs on.  They have pretty good eyesight and I guess around 20 feet or so, if he sees me coming he dives
back into the safety of the water and under the shell.

Thus, the name red slider.  Red for the markings on the side of his face and slider for the way he slides into the
water.  Left alone he will do this many times during the sunlight hours.

So what I do is get my binoculars out and observe him from a distance.  He is very aware of his surroundings
noticing things like leafs falling off the trees.

The one in Tatman`s pictures doesn't seem shy...Of course the person taking the pictures may have used a very powerful zoom lens.
That is a pretty critter. Thanks for the picture, Tatman!!

We tried turtles but they didn't last long.  In Jersey you can't buy them but you can buy them in another state and bring them to Jersey.  We tried with two, one died about a month after we got them and the other lasted three months total.

I heard of turtles making children who have them sick... Is that why you can`t buy them in your area?

I had two turtles when I was a kid.  I had to change the water often otherwise it would smell horrible.
