Adventure Comics was at one time DC Comics longest running comic book, and the longest running comic book in the world.

It was started originally as New Comics, then changed to New Adventure Comics and finally Adventure Comics.  It began before Action Comics (which introduced Superman) and Detective Comics (which introduced Batman).

Adventure comics featured a variety of strips, including Starman, Manhunter, and Sandman.  It was the long time home for the Superboy strip,  but eventually Superboy was outclassed by a spin off from his strip called the Legion of Super-Heroes.

The Legion began as guests in various Superboy/Superman/Supergirl stories.  The were a 30th Century group of heroes who went back in time to recruit Superboy and Supergirl to their group.

As sales slipped on Superboy the Legion took over his strip as the lead in Adventure for many years.

Eventually the Legion was moved out of Adventure due mainly to the laziness of the editor.  DC wanted Supergirl to appear in his own book, and the editor of the entire Superman line, reluctant to increase his workload by adding another book, moved the Legion out and replaced them with Supergirl.  The Legion flipped from Action comics as a backup to Superboy's own book.  Eventually slipping sales on Superboy's book lead them to take over that as well.  So twice the Legion actually replaced Superboy in a book, including his own magazine.

Meanwhile, Supergirl flopped in Adventure and was replaced by a variety of strips, including Aquaman, Plastic Man, Dial H for Hero and various others.  It was cancelled with issue #504 some years ago.

The wheel eventually turns, however, and sales have declined on the Legion's own magazine.  DC announced it's cancellation in January of 2009, their 50th Anniversary year.

Upon reflection DC opted not to stop the long running Legion series after all, but return it to it's original home, a revival of Adventure Comics.  So DC brings back it's longest running and oldest book and returns the Legion to their home as well.

In January the tv series Smallville will have Clark Kent meet the Legion of Super-Heroes.  The features heroes will be Saturn Girl (telepathic), Lightning Lad (lightning powers) and Cosmic Boy (magnetic powers).

Very interesting.  My problem is that most of the comic book shops around my area have closed or moved away.

Will have to check this out next time I make a visit.

You spoke of DC as "his" but does it stand for "Detective Comics"? I have seen
DC all my life, but never wondered what it stood for, before.

DC does derive it's name from "Detective Comics", which was the book which introduced Batman.

Actually DC originally was two different companies:  All American comics and National Publications.  They merged during the 40's.  They began calling themselves "DC" after Detective Comics, but Adventure Comics was introduced before Detective was.

Unfortunately DC is not picking up the numbering from Adventure, and instead is starting with a new #1, which is designed to make the returned book more collectable.  Adventure was only dropped because DC was unable to find a strong lead feature for it once the Legion of Super-Heroes was moved out (first to Action Comics and then Superboy, which it took over at around issue #196).

Which is why DC is essentially bringing the Legion back to it's original home.

The plan for Adventure Comics has altered somewhat.  After a delay it's being released next month (August).

The current version of DC's Superboy is now slated to be the "star" of the book, with the Legion of Super Heroes as the backup.  Which is the setup the book had in the 1960's.

I'm wondering how they will attract the kids of today? They all own a game system and have a blood ,guts and gore violence immunity. It's really too bad that it couldn't be comics influencing them a bit we learned a lot a bit of values and morels from our heroes reading them.

The thing which keeps both Marvel and DC going (comic books sell a lot less nowadays than they did years ago) is the movies/tv shows/video game spin offs.  Not to mention the action figures.

The ability to reprint the material in "trade paperbacks" also helps keep the books going.

Despite the claims on some forums that the Legion was "selling well" at the time of their cancellation in their own book, the fact of the matter is that the book was losing about 1,000 readers a month...now days publishers like to can a book before it reaches the point where they are losing money on it.  Most likely the trend indicated the book would have been losing money soon which explains why it was dropped.

I'm uncertain how Adventure will do since most books now days use the main characters name as the title.
