DC does derive it's name from "Detective Comics", which was the book which introduced Batman.
Actually DC originally was two different companies: All American comics and National Publications. They merged during the 40's. They began calling themselves "DC" after Detective Comics, but Adventure Comics was introduced before Detective was.
Unfortunately DC is not picking up the numbering from Adventure, and instead is starting with a new #1, which is designed to make the returned book more collectable. Adventure was only dropped because DC was unable to find a strong lead feature for it once the Legion of Super-Heroes was moved out (first to Action Comics and then Superboy, which it took over at around issue #196).
Which is why DC is essentially bringing the Legion back to it's original home.
