In some places the weight of a tent can be dispensed with by building shelters from natural materials. However, in most places this is impractical either because it takes too long or the lack of suitable materials without damaging the local environment.

Probably the easiest makedo shelter can be fallen branches from pine trees.  One can lash these together and form a lean to ....to protect from the elements.  Digging a hole and laying branches over can suffice also.  Elements of rain and wind are the most predominate forces to deal with.  Cold and snow are the most difficult.

The key is keeping one from exposure and hypothermia.  Both of these are fatal.
