A Mexican comic book is stirring controversy after being sold here in a Houston Wal-Mart. The character is Memin Pinguin. He is a black cartoon character that was "drawn with exaggerated features, such as think lips and wide-open eyes. Do you think the cartoon is racist? http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,378085,00.html

Unfortunately, those are similar to some things which were published by comics publishers back in the 40's.
DC and Marvel, of course, no longer allow this today.

I read Dan McFan's blog on a regular basis. He's always interesting to read.

He seems to be a Comic fan. As for the comic above, Did you notice the woman in the comic? She looks like a Mammy from pre civil war times.... Aunt Jemima syrup uses a similar caricature on their bottles and ad`s. I suppose we should out law those as well.

McFan's observation was a good one, which is the character that people are complaining about was always a good role model.
McFan is a comics fan, but especially one of an inker named Vince Colletta. Colletta did a lot of work during the 60's, 70's and even 80's. Mostly because (a) he was fast and (b) he worked for an extremely low page rate.
Colletta has come under some criticism since his death in that he's been accused of erasing a lot of details from the pencil artist's work, most notebly Jack Kirby. Kirby didn't seem to mind until his assistant, named Mark Evanier, recommended Kirby fire Colletta off of his New Gods books around 1971.
