RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- Circuit City Stores Inc. filed for bankruptcy protection on Monday heading into the busy holiday season as analysts question whether the nation's second-biggest electronics retailer will be able to survive.

The company said it decided to file for bankruptcy protection because it was facing pressure from vendors who threatened to withhold products during the holiday period. The company also said it cut 700 more jobs at its headquarters, after announcing a week ago that it would close 20 percent of its stores and lay off thousands of workers.

Circuit City filed for Chapter 11 protection, which will allow it to hold off creditors and continue operations while it develops a reorganization plan. Its Canadian operations also filed for similar protection.

Doing so "should provide us with the opportunity to strengthen our balance sheet, create a more efficient expense structure and ultimately position the company to compete more effectively," James A. Marcum, vice chairman and acting president and chief executive, said in a statement.

I found them to be a bit disorganized compared to other electronic stores such as
Fry's and Best Buy.

Too many stores open too quickly now they are in salvage mode.  Anytime you
expand too quickly, things like this happen.

High end electronics are not so chic right now.  Putting food on the table is.

I never really liked circuit city.  The sales staff always seemed to have bad attitudes.  I could never find what I wanted there anyways.

I know...They mostly stood around talking to each other, ignoring customers in our local CC. Angry

Windmill, you might indeed be waiting for that flat screen.
I heard they are having massive closings and layoffs at DSL...

Going to be real interesting

DHL is the main carrier for my Xerox products
especially the return for cartridges and fuser modules
shipped back to their regional centers in Rochester, N.Y.
and Nogales, AZ.

They might contract another courier to keep the supply line
going. They used to use UPS, maybe they will go back.

Circuit City has the most annoying pop-up adds here - many times I have
clicked on a topic, only to be sent to Circuit City. Now maybe they could
go away.

Maybe not, they are hoping to get back on their feet. They closed a bunch of stores, and filed bankruptcy in an effort to develop a reorganization plan.
