From an early age. I remember one time visiting a classic windmill and being so intrigued by it.
An old one that was used for milling, grinding grain. Full wood. The inside was filled with gain dust and I could hear the gears churning. Outside the sails rolled with the wind. I wanted to very much live in one. Never been to Holland, so I guess I missed out.
We have these modern ones now that generate electricty or ones that are more ortamental rather than functional.
Windmills and Lighhouses......my fondess that I cannot explain why.
my avatar is one of an art display located in Colorado.

My Dad lived in a lighthouse for a while... He was in the coastguard. He always seems happy when he tells us about those days.
I`ve never seen a windmill in real life, just pictures.

Those first impressions I got at an early age visiting that windmill. It seem alive with the rotating sails. Even when there was only a slight breeze, the entire structure would creak and moan. It kind of scared me but I loved looking out the windows and seeing the countryside below.
Lighthouses are more ominous. They are remote and in stretches of seacost that is sometimes inhospitable. Wind and rain with cold all around. There are a few in California that I have visited. Point Reyes is the most famous that I encountered. Someday I would like to visit the eastern seaboard where many legendary ones exist.

As a child, we had a tall, metal windmill (like the one in the Tatman photo of a metal windmill). I just took it for granted, as if everyone had one. Back on the farm, used for pumping water from the well.
We have quite a few lighthouses on the Washington (state) coast. Maybe Windmill could visit one of those, sometime.
So I love Windmills, too!

Methinks you've got the images down pat, tatman.
I remember this one old windmill that had a waterwheel installed. Spent many hours there just staring at the sails and the small water buckets on the waterwheel. The deep pool of water only added to the ambience. In the pools reflection, you could see the towering windmill and its course set in the breeze.
30 years ago and I still remember it like yesterday..........
