There is now talk of the government appointing a Car Tzar. All I can say is wtf are they thinking? I know we are talking about giving them a lot of money but by any reasonable estimates it is enough for them to continue operating for a few months at most. Will this position disappear when that money has been spent? I doubt it. The Car Tzar would potentially have ability to make future loans......does that scare you as much as it scares me? The last thing the big three needs is some egg head economist telling them what to do. If they haven't figured it out by now state control of industry doesn't work very well.

Sorry for my colorful language. I cleaned it up.  Wink

Supposedly this position is to make certain the money is spent the right way.  It looks to me like another government job which we will have a difficult time getting rid of.

These loans should be relatively short term, even if they stretch for a number of years.  Another issue is that the government may end up being part owner of the big three car companies.
Same with the banks, the government may end up being part owner of a lot of banks.  We're going towards nationalizing banks and car companies.

I was watching a program about the 70"s

the big three was making big cars that got about 10 miles to the gallon then there was the gas crunch

that about when japan started selling small fuel efficient cars

that was the beginning of the end so they had about 30 years to solve their problems

We do need to know the money is being used the way it supposed to. But I see no reason to make up another government position to keep track of them.
Less government is what we need. Not more.
