Both are going by the wayside for mp3 or other types of sound files. They never wear out.
The few CD's I buy, I make copies right away from them. The originals sit. I still have a CD player in my ride (along with a mp3 hookup) so I use them on occasion.
You can also get individual tunes off of Rhapsody or something like that. I-tunes is okay,
Vinyl's only holdout is the volume of unrelased material not in CD/file format. They are quaint but suffer from shelf life. I have very few vinyl pieces laying around. Ah, the old sound of popcorn of the record going off of my old Led Zepplin.....those were the days........

My friend does some conversion from vinyl to CD for me on occasion.
I got this nice Talkings Heads bootleg he just done. Mucho thanks!
Also the infamous DB Cooper and their only hit album of 1981: Buy American.
He even did a couple of DVD transfers to CD form. Got a nice Roxy Music at the Apollo and Peter Gaberiel in Italy like this. Who needs visuals anyway? I enjoy the music!

They have the hardware out to record album to cd
but I don't feel like shelling out 400.00 bucks for a turntable

Tubers, there is a way around this mess.
You can run your conventional turntable though your stereo and use a hookup on to your computer. The stereo has to have the right plugs to do so (more modern). You computer records the files and then you can burn them on CD. One of the real drawbacks is you have to record in real time from vinyl.
