LAKELAND, Fla. -- New cameras that take photos of motorists running red lights at intersections in Lakeland have generated more than a half-million dollars for the city and the company offering the system.

The cameras were installed June 1. So far, the city has mailed 4,400 violations to motorists who have run the red lights.

The cost for a violation is $125 for the first two offenses. The tickets double to $250 on the third offense. People who are ticketed are not assessed points on their driving record. Mailed citations include two still photos and a close up of the car's license plate. People can view a 12-second video of the infraction online.

Where I am I noticed they recently did a bunch of road construction.  They now have those light camera on the stoplights.  They made left turns on a main road illegal.  You have to use a new ramp.  Anyway, they put the camera on the lights in order to catch the people still making the left turns onto the road.

Some places need the cameras, like on the rod Plenty was talking about, but in most cases, I think it`s all about the money they generate, and less about keeping people safe.

I went through that intersection where I live today that added the cameras and if they are working they're probably netting a lot of money, too.  I saw several people make the now illegal left turns onto the highway on both sides of the road.
