Many support ex-principal in gay rights case

A young girl who is a lesbian told her principal that she was lesbian.
The principal turned around and told her parents about her being lesbian. 
She sued the school for a bunch of reasons and won the suit.

Do you think it was inappropriate for the principal to tell her parents that she was a lesbian?

I think he was wrong, part of which is that a jury awarded a judgment on the basis of him violating confidentiality.

He probably thought he was doing the right thing but essentially he got into an area which he probably should not have.

Unless her being a lesbian effected the school as a whole he probably should have kept his mouth shut.

I have a couple opinions on this:

First, IMO, I don't believe children under 18 have "rights" of confidentiality when it comes to their parents/guardians. They are not legally considered adults and should not expect anything beyond resonable privacy from their legal guardians. i.e., If my kid ever told the principal something that he or she felt I should know, I hope that they would tell me.

Second, I think the extreme measures that the principal took were inappropriate and wrong, UNLESS it is a school rule not to wear such attire to the school, which I didn't see any mention of.

Third, I just think it's entirely crazy that this whole thing went to trial.
