Largest U.S. oil company surges past analyst estimates to post net income of $14.83 billion.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Exxon Mobil Corp. set a quarterly profit record for a U.S. company Thursday, surging past analyst estimates.

Exxon Mobil (XOM, Fortune 500), the leading U.S. oil company, said its third-quarter net profit was $14.83 billion, or $2.86 per share, up from $9.41 billion, or $1.70, a year earlier. That profit included $1.45 billion in special items.

The company's prior record was $11.68 billion in the second quarter of 2008.

The latest quarter's net income equaled $1,865.69 per second, nearly $400 a second more than the prior mark.

The company said its revenue totaled $137.7 billion in the third quarter.

cked $1,865.69 per second!?!?!? It takes me 15 days to make that much!  That is an insane profit, something needs to be done about that!

It sucks being at the mercy of oil companies. If people really took a stand, something might change. But, I just don't think it will happen.  Undecided

People probably won`t take a stand...It is too easy to sit back and complain. (I`m as guilty as the next person, don`t get me wrong.)

I think people would take a stand if they knew what they can do.  Those gas boycott days don't hurt the oil companies at all.

Yes, that`s true. I feel helpless to do anything, about any of this mess. It is very discouraging.
You are also right about the boycotts. They know that in the end we need gas to get where we need to go. The oil companies, and the government, (I also blame them)  have us under their thumbs, and it is infuriating.

It would take something monumental to make a change. I'm talking about workers - at least hundreds - not going to work. If you could gather a large enough group to "strike" if you will against oil prices, I think that may make some headway. Wonder if you could form some type of group or union-like membership??
